The All-India Debt and Investment Survey (AIDIS) conducted by the National Statistical Office is a nationally representative survey of Indian households that collects information about their assets and liabilities. The survey is unique in that in provides detailed information about the volume and value of financial and physical assets households own as well as the incidence and source of indebtedness among households.
Such an information is useful as it allows us to construct the balance sheet of households, thereby helping us understand the level of interaction households have with the formal financial system. Studying the financial behaviour of households is crucial in assessing the state of access to and use of formal financial services and the progress Indian households have made in their financial inclusion journey.
In this slide deck, we cover some of the key insights from the AIDIS 2019 that throw light on the current landscape of household finance in India. It is divided into two parts: the first part covering how the Indian households participate in the formal financial market and allocate their wealth, and the second part focussing on how they seek credit to fulfil their financial needs and goals.
Some of the outstanding takeaways from our analysis are: the low allocation towards financial assets despite widespread participation, the need to provide impetus to improve households’ access to a basic suite of financial services beyond just bank accounts, the increased indebtedness levels among rural households, the greater reliance on formal credit especially among urban households, the regional disparities in indebtedness—with the southern states leading the rest of the country—and financial inclusion—with the north-eastern states lagging the rest of the country.
